Understanding AC Joint Separation

What is AC Joint Separation?

AC joint separation occurs when ligaments connecting the collarbone (clavicle) to the shoulder blade (acromion) are damaged, causing the bones to separate.

Common Causes:

  • Fall on outstretched arm
  • Direct blow to shoulder
  • Contact sports injuries
  • Motor vehicle accidents

Common Symptoms

  • Pain at top of shoulder
  • Visible bump or deformity
  • Pain with overhead activities
  • Weakness with lifting
  • Tenderness over AC joint

AC Joint Separation Grades

Grade I (Mild)

AC ligament sprain, no displacement

Symptoms:

  • Mild pain over AC joint
  • Tenderness to touch
  • Pain with overhead activities
  • No visible deformity

Treatment:

Conservative: rest, ice, NSAIDs, sling for comfort

Recovery Time:

2-4 weeks
Grade II (Moderate)

AC ligament tear, slight displacement

Symptoms:

  • Moderate pain
  • Visible slight bump
  • Pain with arm movement
  • Weakness with lifting

Treatment:

Conservative: immobilization, physical therapy

Recovery Time:

6-8 weeks
Grade III (Severe)

Complete AC and CC ligament tears

Symptoms:

  • Severe pain
  • Obvious deformity
  • Significant weakness
  • Difficulty with daily activities

Treatment:

Conservative vs surgical depending on activity level

Recovery Time:

3-6 months
